The Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health in the United States (NIAID/NIH), promotes "A Collaborative Solution for Tropical Diseases: The Luso-American Response", a three-year conference series focusing on the development of collaborative research projects in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS.

The Conferences emphasize research being done on or in Africa, namely with reference to Lusophone countries.

This triennial project 2007/2009/2011 will focus exclusively on three selected diseases - tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS - encompassing in each year and for each disease, three interrelated initiatives:
(1) an international conference including talks and round table discussions;
(2) the Luso-American Collaborative Response Awards (LACR), for start-up research and policy projects resulting from interaction of conference speakers and participants;
(3) the Tropical Diseases: the Luso-American Collaborative Response Book, a collection of the selected papers presented at each conference.
